DIY Free People Rainbow Fishtail Braid Trial

As you all may know, I love to create stuff with my hands. I like to make things that enhance a female's natural beauty. Things that draw attention to a girl's beautiful features, so that one can not look away. That being said, I also like to enhance my own beauty with new and creative techniques.

About a year ago, Free People included an awesome Rainbow fishtail braid in their summer catalogue. At first, I bought some single clip, colored extensions and fishtailed my own detachable braid ( Included with a glow-in-the-dark extension). It was pretty awesome. Last week I finally decided to go all the way! And now I am wondering why it took me this long!
Here is an example of Free People's rainbow fishtail braid (keep in mind this was created by professionals):

Now of course Free people used the coolest colors known to woman, so it took some time finding some vibrant colors that were not too common. Of course I had to purchase my own extensions, sew on the clips and dye the hair myself in order to look truly and uniquely Free People. I wasn't bothered by this because, well because I sure do love my art projects. Plus I knew this one was going to be worth the effort.

Tripped out Turquoise
I ran down to Sally's Beauty Salon and searched the shelves for a color that made my eyes smile. Voila! I found it! Beyond the Zone semi-permanent hair dye! I purchased three bottles, some honey blonde hair extensions, and a few extension hair clips to sew onto the hair tracks.
Then the dying process began. I didn't want the colors to turn out too bright, so I slathered the colors separately on the blonde tracks I cut and let them sit for about 5 minutes. When it was time to rinse them out they were perfect. They had these streaks of bright color and streaks of faded color. This created an array of colors which I was totally excited about.

Then came the sewing. I sewed the clips onto the extensions and after about 20 minutes of impatiently sewing, it was time to braid! Well now, let me warn you that I am not the best at braiding. I feel like an 80 year old woman with arthritis when I attempt to braid. I usually force my best friend Kelsey to do my braiding (her and her magic fingers) but she was not around and I was getting super anxious.

I gave it a shot and let me stress to you, doing a fishtail french braid on yourself is not as easy as it seems. In fact it was quite difficult. I was trying to braid behind my head without looking, yet trying to grab pieces of color so they wouldn't get lost inside the braid. After three times of re-doing my braid I was finally satisfied (that or I was extremely exhausted of holding my arms over my head for the last hour). And BOY OH BOY was I PLEASED. I wore this style braid for three days straight, re-doing it everyday, and with time I got quicker and more skilled.

If you focus on the colors you can see: Light pink, white, aqua green, pink, blonde, purple, and florescent fuchsia. Thank you Free People for this awesome hair style inspiration.

WARNING!!!*** Once your friends find out you can do this, expect a lot of begging and pleading from them, asking if you can preform this hairstyle on their lovely set of locks. ***!!!
